Dr Leonard Shan, FRACS, PhD Melb is a distinguished vascular surgeon at St. Vincent’s and Epworth Hospitals, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at The University of Melbourne, Head of Research in the Department of Vascular Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and editorial board member of the Annals of Vascular Surgery. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr Shan is also the founder of the ShanVascular Veins Centre which provides outpatient-based treatment of chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins in dedicated operating theatres. 

Dr Shan is internationally recognised for his expertise on quality of life after surgery which he has been investigating for the last 15 years. He was awarded a Commonwealth Government sponsored PhD in vascular surgery from The University of Melbourne with the mentorship of world-renowned surgeons Professor Alun Davies and Professor Peter Choong. His thesis has significantly advanced our understanding of how to achieve outcomes that matter most to patients. Dr Shan’s body of work includes 35 publications (h-index 16, >1200 citations) in some of the highest-ranking journals in medicine and surgery such as Circulation and Annals of Surgery. ​

​​As an academic vascular surgeon, Dr Shan maintains a commitment to evidence-based and multidisciplinary care of a diverse range of arterial and venous conditions. At St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dr Shan helps to run specialised services for varicose veins, high-risk foot problems, and dialysis access. He is known for engaging his patients in shared decision-making to identify optimal treatment solutions, ensuring effective management of his patients’ conditions.

​Dr Shan manages a wide variety of arterial and venous conditions in a multidisciplinary environment. He takes pride in supporting his patients throughout their entire treatment journey.
